One of our favorite outings we’ve had so far after moving to England has been our visit to Sandringham Park. Located just minutes from the coast in beautiful Norfolk, the queen’s royal estate is the perfect place to enjoy a classic, family-friendly day out. With an abundance of history, natural beauty, and activities, it’s a must-see for anyone planning a trip nearby. I’m sharing everything you need to know to make the most of your visit!

What is Sandringham Park?
Sandringham Estate is one of the royal residences used by the Queen and royal family and is accompanied by Sandringham Park. Located in a Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the 20,000 acre estate boasts 60 acres of formal gardens, sweeping lawns, and historical monuments like St. Mary Magdalene Church, which dates back to the 16th century.
Plan to Stay Awhile
Although the grounds may seem quite remote and private, there is actually a lot to do at Sandringham Park. In fact, the Sandringham Estate website recommends planning to spend at least four hours when visiting, so plan accordingly!
For fair weather days, it’s a beautiful spot to have a picnic, whether you bring your own blanket or use one of the many tables provided on-site. We have been using this cute, vintage picnic basket to store the kids’ snacks and lunches for outings like this, and I absolutely love it.

Besides walking, biking, or jogging around the gorgeous grounds, visitors can also enjoy afternoon tea in the restaurant, browse the gift shop, or visit the ice cream stand. All of these are conveniently located adjacent to one another in The Courtyard.
Tip: There is a requirement to pre-book at least 48 hours in advance for all tables for Afternoon Tea.
If you’re visiting Sandringham Park with little ones, then you won’t want to miss out on the new Adventure Play Area. Recently opened in April of 2021, this massive playground includes a 26 ft. water tower-inspired slide, a toddler play area, zip lines, and much more. Our children could have easily spent hours playing in here, and have already asked when we’re going back!
Tip: There is a small cost to park your car at Sandringham Park. The entrance to the Adventure Play Area is free.
There is also, of course, the estate to consider during your visit to Sandringham Park. Sandringham House, the gardens, and St. Mary Magdalene Church are all accessible for visitors to tour from the Spring until mid-October. If you’re unfamiliar, this is the same church that is photographed annually as the royal family makes their way here from Sandringham to attend Christmas mass together.
Plan Ahead to Attend Events
If you’re fortunate enough to be able to plan far enough ahead, it’s definitely worth considering going at a time when the estate is holding one of their highly esteemed events and combing this with your outing. Several different events are held year-round, and more information on dates and ticket purchasing can be found on the estate’s website here.
This year, we chose to go apple picking in the queen’s orchard. This is an annual event that has become a tradition for many families in the area, and this one does not require you to purchase tickets or book in advance. Simply show up with your bags or baskets (there are some available for purchase on-site in case you forget), and pick your apples!
Tip: The orchard is located a short drive down the road from the main estate. Simply follow the small blue signs for apple picking!
In addition to apple picking, there is also a small stand where you can purchase apple juice and cider made from apples picked at the queen’s orchard.
A newer addition to the estate’s events is Luminate Sandringham. Back for it’s second year, Luminate Sandringham is an illuminated light trail through the Royal Parkland. It ends in The Courtyard, where you can roast marshmallows over the fire. This year, they are also adding a 1906 Vintage Fairground, complete with a carousel, Ferris wheel, and a few other classic rides.
Tip: Entrance to the Fairground requires a purchased Luminate ticket. You must purchase vintage ride tickets separately.
Locals who attended last year hold this event in high regards, and weekend tickets for December are already starting to go fast. If you were on the fence about attending, this is your sign to book your tickets now!
There are some rules to follow
This probably isn’t that surprising given that it is a royal residence. Still, it’s important to be aware of these before you go. First, Sandringham House prohibits the use of photography inside. This also includes videography and prior permission must be obtained to use any drones or tripods. Professional photographers who wish to utilize the grounds for client sessions may do so only with an obtained photography permit from the estate.
Additionally, Sandringham Park welcomes dogs as long as they are leashed, and they are a common sight there, but they are not allowed within the House or Gardens unless they are registered assistance animals.
For more information, including visiting hours and tickets, check out the official Sandringham Estate website.
