Situated on Florida’s Emerald Coast and nestled between Destin and Pensacola is a little-known secret. Navarre Beach, more recently tagged as Florida’s most relaxing place, is pure beach paradise. Surrounded by state parks and preserved national seashore, it boasts miles of untouched, natural beauty. You won’t find tourist traps or an overabundance of infrastructure blocking those pristine views here. Instead, Navarre Beach is home to warm, crystal waters and sandy white beachfront as far as the eye can see. It is no wonder why this piece of heaven on earth is consistently named as a top Florida beach year after year. Here are the top seven reasons why Navarre Beach is Florida’s best kept secret.
1. The Beach
Of course, the secret jewel of Navarre is the beach itself.
Not only does it offer warm, sparkling waters you’d expect to find only in the Caribbean, but the miles of protected lands and lack of notoriety allow for vast open space to spread out and relax. That is of course, without feeling congested with the summer crowds that flood some of the larger, more well-known destinations.
In other words, if you are coming to the beach with plans to relax, Navarre Beach is it.
For the more active and outdoorsy types, there are activities besides laying out and basking in that famous Florida sun. At the forefront of the beach is the longest fishing pier on the Gulf of Mexico, which was recently taken over and is going through some exciting renovations. The Navarre beach pier offers daily fishing licenses, an on-site restaurant, volleyball courts, soon-to-be kid’s play area, and unrivaled views of the Gulf. The pier is also a hot spot for surfers, kayakers, paddle-boarders, and of course, those looking for that perfect, Instagrammable shot.
Movie aficionados may also recognize this familiar location from the movie Jaws 2, which was famously filmed on Navarre Beach.
It is also worth mentioning that Navarre is uniquely situated around several military bases. Eglin Air Force Base, Hulburt Air Force Base, and Naval Air Station Pensacola are all located in the area. On any given day, you may witness military helicopters or the V-22 Osprey flying over Navarre Beach.

2. Small-Town Vibes
Navarre Beach, which encompasses the barrier island just over the overpass bridge from Navarre proper, is home to only around 1,000 residents. Even the town for which it is named and adjoins, has a population of less than 45,000 residents.
Unlike it’s overcrowded neighbors to the East and West, Navarre Beach’s small-town summer beach feel allows those who visit to truly vacation like a local. Even more unique is the lack of an overbearing presence of chains. Residents favor and support small, locally-owned businesses that offer those treasures and mom and pop restaurants you write home about.
Don’t just take my word for it though. In 2017, Navarre Beach was named by Southern Living as one of the South’s best tiny towns.
3. Close to Attractions
However, it’s close proximity to the larger cities of Destin and Pensacola are perfect for those times when you do want to enjoy the attractions and amenities that a big city has to offer. On a good day, Pensacola is a mere 30 minutes away and Navarre to Destin can take around 35-40 minutes. Both are a straight shot down Highway 98. Even day trips to places like Panama City, Miramar Beach, Mobile, and New Orleans can be accomplished.
This allows tourists and locals alike to enjoy the big city life and its offerings on your own terms while coming home to that serene beach life at the end of the day.
4. Best Seashells
Besides its unsurpassed beauty and small-town feel, Navarre Beach is known on the Emerald Coast as the place to hunt for seashells, sand dollars, and other ocean treasures that wash ashore. In fact, residents come from tens to hundreds of miles away, even foregoing their own beaches nearby, to visit Navarre for this exact reason.
If you are planning a visit, be sure to bring a bucket, as there are thousands of beautiful shells that wash ashore at any given time of the day or year. Some snorkeling gear and a net also offers the chance to find perfectly maintained treasures right off the shoreline.
5. The Wildlife
One of the most impressive and surprising aspects of Navarre that help make it Florida’s best kept secret is the wildlife. On clear days when the flags are green or yellow, head to the pier to catch a glimpse of the resident sea turtles and dolphins that hang around.
Navarre Beach is a protected and flourishing sea turtle habitat and every year, thousands of baby sea turtles hatch all along the beach and if you’re lucky enough, you may be able to catch such a sight. You can also visit Navarre’s resident sea turtle, Sweet Pea, and other marine life, at the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center, conveniently located just across the street from the pier.
Tip: Sea turtles are endangered and are protected by the Endangered Species Act. To protect the turtles and our wildlife, always leave nests and animals undisturbed and keep a safe distance. For more information about sea turtle nesting season and local laws, please click here.

Besides a wide variety of birds and pelicans hanging around the beach, Navarre is also home to a great stingray migration. If you come at the end of the season, you may catch a glimpse of them close to the shoreline.
Don’t have time to check it all out? You can also see cool ocean wildlife through Navarre’s underwater reef cam here.
As if that wasn’t enough, more recently, humpback whales have been spotted in nearby Panama City. Although unusual for this area, it is possible for whales to make a detour while returning North for the summer.
6. The Community
There is much to be said about the residents that are able to keep such a hidden gem preserved in its untouched glory. Navarre, Florida is a close-knit community and it shows. No matter the time of year that you find yourself visiting, there are always plenty of activities going on.
In the summer, you can join the local movie night at the pier on the beach. Jaws 2 is not surprisingly a favorite played every summer. (Update: Unfortunately, the new owners of the pier have not continued this tradition as of yet, and we do not know why. However, they do sometimes play this over the water at nearby Crab Island in Destin, Florida, which is worth checking out). In addition, there are free music nights on the beach weekly throughout the summer, and fireworks over the sound for the fourth of July.
There are local farmers markets and expositions throughout the year. Navarre Beach is also home to an infamous Mardi Gras parade, which draws crowds from around the Panhandle. In the wintertime, locals gather for a beautiful tree lighting ceremony at Navarre Park for Christmas.
The actions of those who live here speak volumes of the type of community you’ll find in Navarre. For instance, last year, one of Navarre’s residents dressed up as the Grinch. He went around Navarre hiding popular toys for children to find through a series of fun treasure hunts. When asked about this amazing display of generosity, he reported that he just wanted to give back to the community that meant so much to him and his family.
7. Things to Do
Don’t let its small size fool you. Although Navarre does have that charming, small-town feel, there are still plenty of fun things to do in and around Navarre. No matter the time of year, rain or shine, there are activities available for everyone.
Here are just a few of my favorite Navarre Beach attractions:
Navarre Park
Right at the foot of the entrance to the bridge that takes you to Navarre Beach is Navarre Park. Overlooking the beautiful sound, Navarre Park boasts two separate playgrounds, fishing piers, walking paths, picnic areas, a splash pad, and its Black Hawk memorial, which serves as a tribute to the lives lost in a military training accident.
Here, you’ll also find the Panhandle Butterfly House, complete with a small outdoor garden and pond filled with ducks and turtles. (Update: Sadly, the Panhandle Butterfly House was closed to be torn down and renovated. They were then going to move to a new location, but this has yet to occur. Please follow their page for any updates on when and where they may re-open). Locals have also been known to hide and leave small, beautifully painted rocks for others to find, hide, or keep. If you’re in this area, be on the lookout for these inspiring tokens and feel free to leave one of your own for others!
Tommy’s Snoballs
Just across the street, you can enjoy Tommy’s Snoballs on a hot day or if you’re up early, head over to Donuts in Paradise in the morning for freshly made specialty donuts. Sit on the swing overlooking the sound and relax while enjoying these tasty treats.
This area is also where you can find Sharkbite, a local food truck favorite. Navarre Beach rentals are available here as well, for kayaks and pontoon boats. A fun water bounce course can also be found at this location.
Gulf Breeze Zoo
Down the road a few miles is the small but beautifully kept Gulf Breeze Zoo. The zoo is privately funded and offers information sessions about the animals and an opportunity to get up close and personal with the budgies. Favorite activities here include feeding the giraffes and taking the train around their safari area.
Blackwater River State Park
Technically, Blackwater River State Park is in Milton, although it is in the same county. It is a bit of a drive but well worth it if you love hiking in nature. This nature preserve is home to some beautiful walking trails and paths overlooking the swamp and forests.
Plus, Milton is home to a cute downtown area right on the water full of unique shopping and dining experiences worth checking out.
There you have it, my top seven reasons why Navarre Beach is Florida’s best kept secret. If you’re traveling through Florida and heading further South, be sure to check out another of Florida’s gems, the Island City of Key West!

The sea shells are awesome. It’s the only place we have found whole sand dollars. Have you been to the sand sculpture event?
Christina says
The sand dollars are awesome, aren’t they? I haven’t been to the sand sculpture yet, but our neighbors showed us pictures from one of the past events and it looks so fun! I’m looking forward to going to the next one!
Kayla Duff says
Where are the best places to stay, that is kid friendly, and also on the beach?
Christina says
Hi Kayla, great question! Navarre Beach is mostly comprised of vacation rental homes and condos, so Air Bnb would be a good place to look if you want to go that route. However, my absolute favorite hotel that is kid-friendly and beachfront would be Springhill Suites by Marriott. Not only are they directly on the beach and just steps away from the pier, there is also a pool with a lazy river and one of my favorite restaurants connected to the hotel that overlooks the ocean. The restaurant is also family friendly, has a kid menu, and often has live music on the weekends. I’ve included the link here if you want to check it out!

We come to Navarre about every year now, we love the serenity, beautiful beaches, condo, wildlife, pier, fireworks on the 4 th of July! It’s a true paradise!
Christina says
I love hearing that! There have been so many wonderful stories about families making this their place to vacation and create amazing memories year after year. Did you make it for the 4th of July this year? They did something new with a Hometown Parade and military salute concert right on the beach before the fireworks. We loved it!
Tim Olsen says
I grew up outside of Pensacola , and we spent countless days at the Navarre fishing pier . It will always be my favorite place . It is true that it is pristine as promised !! YOU WILL LOVE IT !!!
Christina says
That is awesome! We love Pensacola! I was looking at pictures from around the time they filmed Jaws 2 on the beach in Navarre, to the devastation of Hurricane Ivan, and while so much has changed in the area, so much remains the same. Especially that crystal clear water, white sandy beaches, and beautiful pier!
Ray Fink says
Can’t wait to return for our annual family trip. It is an amazing spot .
Christina says
I completely agree, it is truly amazing, especially on those green flag days! Welcome back! 🙂
Holly Harter says
We will be traveling from Indy for spring break 2019. We have read up on many of the exciting things to do and cant wait to make some unforgettable memories! We will see you soon!
Christina says
That’s so exciting, welcome to Navarre! There are a lot of big changes coming to the area, so you’re coming at a great time!
cottonandbows says
What are the crowds like? I refuse to go to beaches that have large crowds, I want lots of space! Navarre looks amazing!
Christina says
Right now is a little busier than usual because of Spring Break, however, it’s still the least-crowded beach you’ll find by far in the area! That being said, there is still plenty of room to spread out, even with the extra people around right now. If you make it down here, the area right near the pier will be the busiest spot. Howver, if you drive down Navarre Beach a ways towards Opal Beach (in the direction of Pensacola), you’ll find a few places you can park and enjoy your own quiet peace of paradise with hardly anyone else around.
Laci says
Navarre sounds AMAZING and PERFECT for a family vacation! Any tips on great places to stay? I preferably need something on the beach. I have a special needs child and a 5 year old and definitely don’t want to walk much or cross a major roadway.
Thanks!
Laci
Christina says
Hi Laci, as a mother to young kids as well I completely understand! I haven’t stayed in any hotels in Navarre myself so please take that into consideration since we live here locally. However, if you are looking for something on the beach that is family-friendly, I would recommend looking into Springhill Suites by Marriott. Not only is it beachfront, but there is a pool for the kids with a lazy river, as well as a great on-site restaurant. It’s also walking distance to the few other restaurants and the pier on Navarre Beach, just a few blocks down the road. The other option to consider is looking into Air BNB or vacation rentals on Navarre Beach. There are a few homes and condos that rent out, especially in the summer. I’ll attach the website for Springhill Suites here if you want to check it out. I hope that helps!

Kelli Bush says
You may want to update your post, the Butterfly area is closed.
Christina says
Hi Kelli, sadly you are correct! I was waiting to hear any news after there was a lot of uncertaintly about where and when they may re-open, as orginally it was supposed to be a temporary shutdown while they renovated the park. Unfortunately, here we are several months later with no new news, so I have updated the post!
Margaret says
My husband and I will be staying at the SpringHill Suites in October. We are excited for a vacation there for some R & R. Thanks for all the great info in your post, I’m looking forward to spending time at the beautiful beach, hunting for shells and checking out the turtle sanctuary.
Christina says
You’re so welcome and that is a great choice for a hotel! I’m sure you will have a great time and thanks for coming and checking out our beautiful piece of paradise!

Loved this review of Navarre. I have visited Destin and loved it and now we may actually be moving to the area so I’ve been looking for places to live near Hurlburt Field. Navarre sounds just like the small town feel I’m looking for!
Christina says
That’s so exciting, welcome neighbor! I did a lot of research myself before we moved here and could not be happier with choosing to live in Navarre. It was quite a decision for us as my husband works at Eglin AFB. However, even with the commute, we would choose Navarre again if we had to do it over. It really is an amazing place!
Todd Kirchner says
My wife & I were long overdue for a vacation. Most time off is spent across a day here or there and 3 day weekends with family following soon to be 14th & 15th grandkids. 1-13 are nearly one thru fifteen years old. Last week was my wife’s birthday and so about a month ago I talked her into a trip and she couldn’t have been more excited to pick Pensacola Beach. It was to be our very first trip to the Florida panhandle. I used your site/post during pre-rsearch and thus Navarre Beach was going to be our concentration point. We’ve been back for three days now and are still tired. But it’s a good tired. We couldn’t wait to start each day and hated to see each one end. We definitely found Navarre Beach and your recommendations to be the magic of the trip. We were there for 2+ days of our four days in the area. From shelling, to snorkeling, to spectacular sunsets and even down to Tommy’s SnoBalls we ran out of time to do all we wanted to, thus already planning for a return next year. My wife keeps googling stuff as if we hadn’t gone yet.
We’ve been to a few places over our married years that we’d like to go back to, yet never with the enthusiasm that makes this wonderful destination a wish for an annual trip going forward. If we didn’t have such a full family life in the Midwest…..we’d move there in a heartbeat. See ya next year & save some shells for us ! Todd & Teresa
Rajen says
Have visited Beautiful Navarre twice last year & liked it so much that we are planning to retire in few months & move permanently to Navarre. It’s as good as any other famous beach in the world or better since it’s not crowded & sand is so white.
Amy Cramer says
Hi! Loved your post. We are thinking of coming for Christmas. Can you recomend a few things that are fun to do around Christmas for kids?
Christina says
That’s so great to hear! Currently, Navarre Park is under construction and they are supposed to be finished with their brand new park in November, so if they are finished in time (fingers crossed), that would be a great option! The Gulf Coast zoo is always great that time of year because of the nicer weather. If you’re okay with driving out a bit, I would also recommend looking into Baytowne Wharf. It is about 45 minutes away, but they hold wonderful events around Christmas and usually have a Santa, ice skating, horse-drawn carriages, and fireworks! The kids always love going there, but especially around Christmas. Hope that helps and have a great vacation!
