Planning Your Paris Family Vacation
A trip to Paris with kids is not your typical poolside or theme park family vacation, and that is part of what makes it so amazing. However, for those traveling to Paris with toddlers or young children especially, making this an epic and unforgettable experience may take some planning.
Fortunately, it’s easy to get young ones excited about going to Paris! Our little ones loved the familiarization with a place that they’ve gotten to know through treasured stories and movies. For example, we read a lot of the Madeline books and Eloise prior to leaving. On the plane, our children watched movies set in the famed city. Ratatouille and Leap are favorites in our home!
Older children might enjoy this scavenger hunt travel book. This keepsake guide takes kids through the major landmarks of Paris, searching for clues along the way. With amazing reviews and ability to keep even older adolescents entertained, it’s definitely worth checking out!
Get it on Amazon here.
It also helps to buy your tickets for certain sites in advance. For our family, we tend to make an itinerary but wait to purchase tickets for attractions until we are there. When traveling with kids, you never know what can happen and sometimes the plans may change last minute!
However, if you are absolutely certain that you’ll be visiting that attraction, it might be worth looking into. Some sites in particular offer front of the line passes with advanced purchase. Any time reduced spending in line with toddlers or babies is usually worth it!
Things to do in Paris with kids
There are so many things to do in Paris with kids, and even France in general. This is our list of the top, must-do activities and experiences!
1. Eiffel Tower
Of course, the Eiffel Tower is one of the top things to do in Paris with kids. While we didn’t plan to make this a huge focus on our last family trip to Paris, we ended up there on multiple days! The Eiffel Tower is such an iconic landmark that even younger kids recognize it and have fun pointing it out no matter where you end up in the city.
Bonus: Admission for children under 4 is free!
It offers an exciting experience for everyone in the family. Whether they are climbing the stairs to the top, pointing out the sites from the breathtaking views, or running around beneath the tower, the Eiffel Tower is a can’t miss on any Paris family itinerary.
Tip: Strollers are allowed on the Eiffel Tower, but be prepared to take everything out and fold it up as it’s required on the elevator!
If you’re planning to stay for the day, spread out at Champ de Mars with a picnic. Oftentimes, there are live music and street performers at nearby Trocadéro. My little ones had a blast just running after the pigeons!
Don’t forget to check out the Eiffel Tower at night as well. After sunset, the Eiffel Tower lights up and that’s when the magic really starts.
Tip: In the summer, the lightshow starts late, after 10 PM. My kids didn’t make it!
If traveling with younger children, there are lots of nearby restaurants and cafes that offer excellent views of the Eiffel Tower so they can snack, rest, or hang out while you wait for a show.
If you’re traveling to Paris with kids, the Eiffel Tower is a can’t miss experience. It’s something you and your kids will never forget!
For operating times, ticket prices, and more information, check out the official Eiffel Tower website.
2. Parisian Carousels
Paris has a certain, je ne sais quoi, that is pure magic. I believe part of that is the vintage, random merry-go-rounds sprinkled throughout the city. No matter how old you are, happening upon those old Parisian carousels can transport you straight back to childhood.
For those traveling to Paris with kids, riding at least one of the carousels is a must-do experience. For those with littles, the vintage rides set against the gorgeous city backdrop create memories that will last.
Although they can be found throughout Paris, our top picks include the Trocadero Carousel, adjacent to the majestic Warsaw Fountain, and of course, the Tour Eiffel Carousel, located just below the twinkling tower.
Heading to the Jardin des Plantes? Not only is the park itself one of the best things to do in Paris with kids, but it also has one of the most unique carousel experiences in the world. Here, children can choose from riding some extinct animals, including a triceratops or the dodo bird!
3. Notre Dame
While not typically thought of when considering things to do in Paris with kids, Notre Dame Cathedral was a hit with my little ones. Or, as my daughter calls it, “the church where Quasimodo lives!” Thanks to the magic of Disney and the Hunchback of Notre Dame, the stunning gothic cathedral provided my children with the experience of bringing their own history and familiar characters to life.
Tip: Don’t be deterred by a seemingly long line. Ours had several hundred people but moved very quickly!
Besides the beauty of the church itself, there is some amazing history within Notre Dame. Religious families may also enjoy the opportunity to discuss the reverent history here. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that on the first Friday of the month, the Crown of Thorns is displayed.
Just outside, a small playground offers little ones the chance to get their energy out after being shushed in the cathedral. It’s also a great place to enjoy the views of the Seine River and watch the boats pass by.
While younger children may not be able to fully appreciate the reverent history and stunning architectural features of Notre Dame, it remains a magical experience and one of the best things to do in Paris with kids.
Be sure to visit the official Notre Dame website for more information to help plan your visit.
4. Luxembourg Gardens
Luxembourg Gardens, or the Jardin du Luxembourg, is the ultimate kid’s playground paradise in Paris. Located in the 6th arrondissement near Sorbonne University, the park offers the perfect opportunity to let little travelers burn off some energy.
Not only are the gardens are views here impressive, but so are the several play areas. They are divided up and color coded by age-range, and gated to keep in any would-be escape artists.
Tip: There is a small entry fee for adults and children over 15 months old, but it is well worth it!
In addition, you can find shops and stands selling sweets, a pond for sailing boats, pony rides, a children’s theatre, and more! The opportunities are endless, for children young and old. When considering things to do in Paris with kids, Luxembourg Gardens can make up an entire day of fun!
Check out the official tourism page for the Jardin du Luxembourg for more information!
5. The Louvre
As it turns out, going to the Louvre with kids is somewhat controversial. There are those out there who recommend skipping it altogether. I am not one of those people.
When planning our own family trip to Paris, the Louvre was a high priority for me. While this one wasn’t chosen for the kids specifically, we managed to survive with a two and five-year-old in tow! In fact, our children, although young, had fun!
There are usually a few reasons why people choose not to visit the Louvre with kids, and generally, this comes down to fear of long lines, big crowds, and the children becoming bored, whiny, and missing out on important artworks.
With some planning, the Louvre can (and I believe should) be accomplished with kids. We entered later in the day, and while there was a small line to enter the famous pyramid entrance, we came in through the Porte des Lions. This small entrance near the lions had no line, and once downstairs, we were surprised to find no wait for tickets. In fact, the longest line we found was for the bathrooms.
If you haven’t been to the museum before, it is absolutely huge. Even without kids, one would be hard-pressed to see everything the Louvre has to offer in one day. However, if you go in with a plan, you can hit up the most important artworks on your list, and then go from there.
Our little ones enjoyed looking at the paintings and statues. Small cafes throughout the Louvre provided quick snacks and reprieve for the kids as needed. Since returning from our trip, seeing the Mona Lisa remains one of the most talked about aspects of our family vacation to Paris.
However, the magic of going to the Louvre with kids also exists on the grounds outside. Just outside of the main entrance is a small park. Green grass lawns, sculptures, fountains, and amazing views of the city can be found here.
There is also a ferris wheel within sight and short walking distance nearby! If you are looking for things to do in Paris with kids, don’t miss out on going to the Louvre!

6. The Catacombs
Of course, this one may not be suitable for some children or all families. However, for those that dare, the Catacombs will definitely be an unforgettable outing in Paris with kids.
Touted as “the world’s largest grave,” the Catacombs in Paris are the final resting place for the remains of over 6 million people. Although creepy in nature, it is the result of some fascinating history and architectural ingenuity. The Catacombs solved the problems of overflowing cemeteries and cave-ins underneath the streets of Paris in the 18th century.
Tip: Strollers will not fit and are not allowed, so plan accordingly!
Although not for the faint of heart, the Catacombs are Parisian history and will definitely make for an epic family vacation to Paris!
Be sure to check out the Paris Catacombs website before visiting, including for quick-access tickets and closure information due to protests.
7. Palace of Versailles
Although outside of Paris, the palace of Versailles is close enough for an amazing day trip and is a must when visiting Paris with kids.
The palace is located about an hour train ride from Paris city center, which was a bonus for my train-obsessed, toddler son.
There is something at the chateau for everyone. The royal residence and site of the beginning of the French Revolution is rich in history, which makes it an unforgettable, hands-on learning experience. Additionally, even the smallest of littles will be blown away by some of the rooms throughout the UNESCO World Heritage site, including the infamous Hall of Mirrors.
Our littles were excited to be in a real castle, walking around the bedrooms of royalty. Gold, art, statues, and beauty galore make up the majestic palace.
Tip: Strollers are not allowed in the palace itself, so be prepared!
Outside, the gardens seem to sprawl endlessly. In fact, we walked around for hours and still didn’t see everything there was around the Palace of Versailles. It’s also a great place to let any wild toddlers or younger kids run free.
It’s a great place to relax, enjoy a picnic lunch on the sprawling grounds, rent a bicycle, or take a row boat around the canal. The only downside to visiting Versailles is running out of time to pack everything in!
However, younger kids may enjoy Marie Antoinette’s hamlet the most. Located just outside of the vast gardens, the hamlet, or Hameau de la Reine, was built as the queen’s escape from her busy and public life as a royal.
The small village contains a meadow with lakes and streams, a small island, beautiful flowers, cottages, and a working farm. Today, kids can run and play along the idyllic fairytale setting and even pet some of the animals.
Check out the official Palace of Versailles website for more information to help plan your visit.
8. Seine River Boat Tours
Flowing through the heart of Paris, the Seine River is a beautiful backdrop that has served the city of love in art, historical battles and sieges, and economics.
There are several boat companies available offering various cruises and tours. For those looking for things to do in Paris, it offers a unique and fun way to see the city while taking a break from constant trekking around.
From dinner and lunch cruises taking you through some of the most well-known sites to tours that act more like a water taxi service offering different destinations, there are many Seine River tours to choose from. This makes it ideal for families traveling with kids of all ages as it allows you to choose what works best for your situation.
Check out the reviews and options available on TripAdvisor to find one that best suits your family.
9. Sacré-Cœur
Sacré-Cœur, the Basilica of the Sacred heart of Paris, is another Roman Catholic site with impressive architecture and some serious religious wow factor. Although this might not hold the attention of younger children for long, there is a lot to take in here that is worth checking out.
The basilica looms at the top of a large hill. At the bottom, a carousel and several shops and cafes with sweets offer a chance to rest before taking on the climb.
There are a few ways to get to the top, including this beautiful detour on the way.
However, our children loved the funicular. The cliff railway has open windows that kids love to stare out of as it moves up or down the hill. Once at the top, Sacré-Cœur offers breathtaking views of Paris.
The church itself is remarkable, both inside and out. Don’t miss out on walking around the basilica and surrounding areas.
The streets and views are spectacular here!
As with many popular tourist areas, there can be scammers near the basilica and surrounding areas. Be sure to check out how to avoid tourist scams in Paris to keep you and your family safe.
A visit to Sacré-Cœur also puts you in a prime location for visiting the rest of the historic art center, Montmartre.
For more information about visiting Sacré-Cœur, be sure to visit their website here.
10. Montmartre
Of course, there is more to Montmartre than just Sacré-Cœur, although it makes a great starting point.
Just across the street from the looming basilica you’ll find the Place du Tertre. The village-like atmosphere seems out of place just minutes away from the bustling Parisian streets. It was once home to legendary artists, including Picasso, Van Gogh, and Soutine. Just spend a few moments walking through, and it’s easy to see why.
Today, it has become an artists hub and a bit of a tourist destination. However, it’s still a great place to purchase your own Parisian art, walk down the cobblestone streets, or stop and enjoy ice cream or coffee at any of the small cafes that line the streets.
Children can get their portrait done by a local artist or ride Le Petit Train de Montemartre, which offers a great reprive for little ones who might struggle going up or down the big hill.
While walking around, you might want to check out or stop by La Mère Catherine. The rogue typical Parisian styled bistro is actually one of the oldest in Paris. Founded in 1793, it offers French cuisine with an unbeatable view of the famed artist district.

Haha it is a huge city but I think I’ve been blessed growing up in Chicago and traveling often, the size did not faze me as much. In fact, I love that Paris has so many great options for public transportation that made it easier for us to zip around the city! Thanks so much, the coronation painting is one of my favorites in the Louvre!

Paris is most definitely on my bucket list. Never thought of bringing my kids along with me!
Christina says
It was number one on my bucket list too! I think I was in the minority but I always imagined taking my own little girl to the Eiffel Tower when she was young (maybe because I’d been dreaming of it since I was a little girl), and feel so blessed that we were able to make that dream come true!
Blythe Alpern says
I’m having flashbacks of when my family when to Paris. I was in college at the time and it didn’t go so well. We hit all the spots, but my parents kind of forgot that 3 teenagers would have opinions about what we wanted to do and so they should also include us in the planning. I think when you are taking kids, no matter their age, it is important to consider what they will also enjoy so the entire vacation is more enjoyable.
Christina says
That’s such a great point! Especially if they are old enough to tell you. Not only would it make it more enjoyable for the kids, but also if they are investing their time and research into what they want to do, then they will be more excited about the trip itself due to that investment. Although my kids are too young to really help in detailed planning right now, it’s why I make it a point to do the little things that I know they would absolutely love, like going to the park, riding the carousels, etc.
